Can Bluetooth Interfere With Wifi

Bluetooth interference with wifi is considered to be one of the major concerns for wireless home networks. Nowadays most of the people are shifting to wireless technology in order to gain accesses to internet using mobile devices like Laptops, Tablets and Smart Phones. This is why many people are installing Wifi routers at their homes in order to gain accesses wirelessly.

Bluetooth can interfere with Wi-Fi because, in some cases, both connections are using a similar radio frequency range to transfer data. The more congested the frequency, the more connection issues you will have. Shaky Wi-Fi or a perpetually disconnecting Bluetooth device is incredibly annoying.

The problem arises when your bluetooth headset keeps on interrupting your wifi connection. While this is not that much serious issue since you can always switch off or disconnect Bluetooth device while working over Internet . Here I will tell you how you can easily Interference between Wifi router and bluetooth headset.

Wireless Networks Operate With Different Channels

If you have Bluetooth device connected at your workplace, then most probably it is not interrupting with your home Wi-Fi connection. This is because all wireless networks operate with channels that are different from each other.

Bluetooth Uses Very Low Power Signal To Operate

Another reason behind the bluetooth interference with wifi is its lower power signal. The bluetooth uses very low power signal to operate which makes it relatively safe for human use. Also, its frequency is just 2.45 GHz which makes it 100 times less powerful than 2.4 GHz used by Wireless Routers to establish a connection between computers and laptops over internet via modem or broadband router

Use N Channel With Less Interference

Network administrators figure out the best channel setting on a router that has the least amount of interference from other wireless networks and devices . In order to do so, you can just go to ‘Settings’ in your Wireless Router and set it up using N Channel which will reduce the bluetooth interference with wifi.

Also use 5GHz band Over 2.4 GHz

Most routers provide a second frequency band at 5GHz, but this feature is usually found only on higher-end models (more than $100). If you want faster speeds and better performance, consider investing in a tri-band router. You will get one 2.4 GHz band and two 5 GHz bands. This way, you can dedicate one band for Bluetooth signal thereby reducing its interference with Wifi internet connection over modem router .

The problem associated with 2.4 GHz band is that, this frequency is being used by many household devices including microwaves which further decreases the performance of wifi internet connection over modem router . On the other hand, 5GHz bands are less populated and provide faster data transfer speed.

2.4 Ghz Interference with Bluetooth – Finally some good news for you! There are some solutions available to reduce interference between Bluetooth & Wifi connections. These techniques can help you get rid of any kind of bluetooth interference problems with wifi wireless routers at homes or workplaces.

Reconfiguring Wifi Not To Interfere With Bluetooth –

Switch Off Bluetooth While Using WiFi Router

This is the first and most basic technique that can help you fix bluetooth interference problem with wifi . All you have to do is just disconnect your Bluetooth device from your computer or laptop. This way, it will not cause any kind of bluetooth interference while working over Wifi connection provided by wireless router .

Overlapping Frequencies –

In this modern world where we have so many different types of electronic gadgets in our homes and offices, it becomes difficult to avoid signals from these electronic gadgets overlap with each other i.e. the frequencies used by each of these devices may overlap with some other device’s frequencies which can cause some kind of problems to that device.

Low Transmission Power

Sometimes due to low power transmission, bluetooth interference problem occurs on wifi connection which is listed as second most common factor for bluetooth interference issues .

Reduce Transmit Power –

If there is a lot of overlap between your WiFi and Bluetooth frequencies, reducing the transmit power on your router and/or Bluetooth may be enough to reduce interference and allow both technologies to coexist peacefully.

To check the transmit power level for your router, go to the manufacturer’s website or user manual. The default settings for most routers is 100%, so if it has been changed, check if it’s still above 0%. Also try setting it as low as possible without causing any connection problems at all.

Change the Channel Width

– If reducing your WiFi power doesn’t help, then try changing the channel width of your router. The default should be 20 MHz , but if that’s not working you could even change it to 40 MHz .

Add a New Access Point –

Sometimes interference from Bluetooth devices can only be stopped by adding another layer of separation between them and creating two distinct networks. With this method, you add an extra access point (AP), and create two different SSIDs: one for each frequency band.

Eliminate Interference From Other Devices –

This is an advanced option which requires some networking knowledge, but it can work really well. You’ll need to get yourself a wireless spectrum analyzer such as the Wi-Spy. This will allow you to see if any other devices in your environment are overlapping with your 2.4 GHz wireless channels and causing interference.

If this is the case, you can either move these devices away from each other or change their channel (if they support it). You could even disable them completely if you’re not using them at all. * Remember that this step should only be attempted by advanced users .

Use 5 GHz 802.11n/802.11ac –

If you have a dual band router and 2.4 GHz WLAN , we highly recommend using the 5 GHz band for your Bluetooth device to avoid interference and provide better performance and reliability .

Update Your Firmware –

If your router is fairly old, you may want to update the firmware to the latest version. This could provide a compatibility fix that will solve interference problems.

Change Channel(s) –

You can also try removing all nearby WiFi networks by setting your access point channel to be different from one of its neighbors’ channels . While this may seem counter-intuitive, this practice is common among WiFi professionals and has been shown to reduce noise floor at the expense of throughput performance. In other words, it reduces congestion on “empty” channels . * You must have good understanding about wifi technology before trying out this tip as it could have negative affect on overall network performance if done carelessly .

Move Bluetooth Transmitter Away From WiFi Router –

If all else fails, you can try relocating your Bluetooth device to see if that makes a difference. Moving it at least 3 feet or 1 meter away from the WLAN access point is recommended in most cases.

Keep Your BT Transmitter in “Pairing Mode” –

Whenever possible, keep your Bluetooth transmitter in ‘pairing mode’. This mode enables data encryption which provides stronger protection for transmissions . * You must ensure that your bluetooth device support pairing mode before engaging it in this step .

Check For Interference –

Finally, always check for interference produced by other devices in your environment when experiencing problems with Bluetooth connectivity. Wireless phones, cordless phones and baby monitors are all very common sources of interference.

Turn Off Bluetooth –

If you’re using a desktop computer, turn off your BT device when not in use to avoid potential interference from other devices . * This tip doesn’t apply to bluetooth adapters that are built into the motherboard of your computer or laptops as they can’t be disabled from “System Tray” area .

Use a Different Channel –

Also try changing the channel on your router and/or BT hub to see if it provides a better connection. The best SSID for each environment is unique, so it’s important to find which works best for you. Do remember this though: there’s no guarantee that adding or changing channels will solve all your problems!

Conclusion

I think the problem associated with bluetooth interference has been now solved by my above discussion related to wifi bluetooth conflicts so good luck !!! I would like to conclude that if you are still experiencing any kind of problems with your bluetooth device while using wifi internet connection, then you can ask me for any kind of clarifications by taking part in the given below discussion box !!!

Bluetooth is a technology that uses short-wavelength UHF radio waves to transfer data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices. A Bluetooth enabled device, when in range of another such device, obtains the link and then can exchange information with the other device.

To avoid interference with other wireless technologies being used on the same frequency band, the Bluetooth uses adaptive frequency hopping and modulation techniques. It also operates at relatively low power levels (100 mW typical) so as not to interfere with other devices that use the 2.4 GHz ISM band including 802.11b/g WLAN s, Cordless Phones , wireless keyboards and mice, etc.

Interference from Bluetooth devices to WLAN is a growing problem as there are more and more Bluetooth enabled devices entering the market everyday . In order to address this issue, first we will discuss the reason behind the bluetooth interference with wifi modem router connection which may be due to overlapping frequencies or low transmission power used by bluetooth device .
